AUTOMOBILIA

The museum has perhaps the largest collection of motoring memorabilia on public display, in the UK.

Petrol pumps, globes, clothing, enamel advertising signs, pedal cars, badges, mascots, garage equipment, die-cast scale models, artworks, motor spirit and oil containers, toys and games, pottery, and glassware.

These historical artefacts, once quite common are now very collectible and are a reminder of a bygone age when family garages throughout the country, provided an attendant to fill the petrol tank, offered to clean windscreens, check oil levels and tyre pressures, all as part of the service.

By the late 1920’s Local Authorities all over the land had become concerned as to the number of ‘unsightly’ petrol pumps appearing on garage forecourts. Petrol suppliers vied to ensure their individual brands and grades were represented, with volume dispensed incentives and franchise deals.

The Theo petrol pump offered a solution in that it could deliver up to six brands, each from separate under ground tanks, guaranteed ‘not to mix’.

The museum has two, now very rare examples of this make, including a Samoa and a Multiple, together with other manufacturers products, including, Avery, Bowser, Gilbert & Barker, and Hammond.
