Dennis is a well polished example
A rare fire engine originally supplied by Dennis Brothers to Benoni Fire Department, Johannesburg, in 1927 is now gleaming and creating much intrigue at the Lakeland Motor Museum.
The name Dennis is synonymous with buses, refuse trucks and fire engines.
The company was founded in 1895, making and selling bicycles from a shop in Guildford.
Its first motor vehicle, a tricycle powered by a De Dion engine was introduced in 1899, with buses following in 1903, and fire engines in 1908.
The museum's Edwin Maher said: "This is a fascinating example of British engineering and when new was very advanced for its day being able to pump 250 gallons a minute, outperforming anything else then available.
"It certainly has a majestic presence and is a particular favourite among our younger visitors.
"The many hours of polishing the brass have been well worth it and today this splendid example of the Dennis marque is possibly looking much better than when leaving the factory over 80 years ago"
This fire engine was supplied with solid rather than pneumatic tyres to avoid the high possibility of punctures being caused by crudely made roads.
