Located in the stunning Lakeland countryside at Backbarrow, on the banks of the River Leven, Lakeland Motor Museum is home to over 30,000 exhibits, including classic cars, motorcycles, bicycles and motoring memorabilia. Recently shortlisted for Cumbria Tourism's Small Visitor Attraction of the Year Award, we welcome thousands of visitors each year to discover our remarkable collection and stories.
We are seeking a Curator's Assistant to support the care, preservation and presentation of our renowned collection of classic and historic vehicles.
Working closely with the Curator, you will assist with vehicle preparation, specialist cleaning, exhibition installation, collections documentation and general museum operations. You will help maintain exceptional presentation standards across the museum, support the upkeep of exhibition spaces and visitor areas, respond to visitor enquiries, and provide excellent customer service as an ambassador for the museum. The role may also include occasional support with admissions, retail, events and reception duties.
The Role
Working closely with the Curator, you will play an important role in maintaining the museum's exceptional standards. Your responsibilities will include:
- Experience working with classic, vintage or historic vehicles
- Knowledge of vehicle cleaning and detailing techniques
- Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to high presentation standards
- Good organisational and record-keeping skills
- Strong customer service and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- A practical approach to supporting museum maintenance and operations
- Full clean driving licence
- A passion for transport heritage
This is a varied and hands-on role, offering a unique opportunity to work with an outstanding collection while contributing to an exceptional visitor experience.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who combines practical skills with a genuine enthusiasm for transport heritage.
Essential skills and experience:
- Experience working with classic, vintage or historic vehicles
- Knowledge of vehicle cleaning and detailing techniques
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to high presentation standards
- Strong organisational and record-keeping skills
- Good communication and customer service skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Practical approach to supporting museum maintenance and day-to-day operations
- Full, clean UK driving licence
- A passion for classic vehicles and transport heritage
Hours
24 hours per week (summer) / 21 hours per week (winter)
Working 3 days from 7, including regular weekend working.
Contract
6-month fixed-term contract, with the potential to become permanent.
Pay
£12.71 per hour
