Lakeland Motor Museum celebrates milestone 1 millionth visitor

Here at Lakeland Motor Museum, we are celebrating a remarkable milestone in 2026 as we welcome our one millionth visitor to our purpose-built home in Backbarrow. Since relocating to our scenic riverside site in 2010—after outgrowing our long-established base at Holker Hall—we have continued to thrive as one of Cumbria’s most distinctive and best‑loved heritage attractions.
Over the past 16 years, our museum has become a true haven for motoring enthusiasts, now home to more than 30,000 exhibits, including 140 classic cars and motorbikes, each carefully curated to take visitors on a captivating journey through motoring history.
Among the standout stars of the collection is the rare 1937 SS Jaguar 100, an elegant and sporty two‑seater considered by many to be one of the most eye‑catching Jaguar models ever created.
Adding a touch of policing heritage to our displays is a beautifully restored 1960 MGA Roadster, once used by Lancashire Constabulary for traffic patrols. Around 50 of these iconic cars originally served in the force, and we are delighted to have one preserved here in Backbarrow.
Motorcycling enthusiasts will find themselves equally well catered for. Our diverse display features celebrated names such as Norton, BSA, Ariel, Vincent and Velocette, alongside a selection of rarely seen AJW motorcycles from the 1920s and 30s. The collection is further enriched by a dedicated exhibit celebrating the world‑famous Isle of Man TT races.
Adding a royal flourish to the museum is a classic Vespa scooter once owned by Princess Margaret, offering visitors a glimpse into the personal motoring tastes of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s sister.
Our collection extends well beyond traditional road vehicles. Visitors can discover the pioneering spirit of early aviation through our 1936 Le Pou de Ciel, an intriguing example of home‑built flight innovation. Nearby, the circa‑1885 Safety Bicycle—hailed as the first modern bicycle design—stands alongside the futuristic Sinclair C5, a quirky 1980s vision of electric transport.
For younger visitors and families, our delightful vintage pedal car collection continues to be a firm favourite, sparking nostalgia in adults and excitement in children alike.
No visit would be complete without exploring the acclaimed Campbell Bluebird Exhibition, which pays tribute to the extraordinary racing careers of Sir Malcolm and Donald Campbell. The exhibition features full‑sized replicas of the 1935 Blue Bird car, 1939 Blue Bird Boat K4, and the 1967 jet hydroplane Bluebird K7, each representing a significant moment in the quest for speed.
Over the years, Lakeland Motor Museum has proudly welcomed a host of well-known visitors from the worlds of motorcycling, television and theatre, including John McGuinness, Guy Martin, Drew Pritchard, John Barrowman, and the late Dave Myers.
Open year‑round and welcoming guests of all ages—including well‑behaved four‑legged companions—the museum continues to offer a memorable day out for families, enthusiasts, and curious explorers alike. Admission is £13.25 for adults and £7.90 for children.
